Philippe Starck was born in 1949 in Paris, France. The son of an aeronautical engineer, Starck studied at the École Camondo in Paris. Starck's first iconoclastic designs, an early indicator of Starck's interest in where and how people live, brought him to the attention of Pierre Cardin who offered him a job as artistic director of his publishing house. At the same time, Starck set up his first industrial design company, Starck Product and began working with manufacturers in Italy and internationally. His concept of democratic design led him to focus on mass-produced consumer goods rather than one-off pieces. Starck's prolific output expanded to include furniture, decoration, architecture and basically everything in between. The buildings he designed went against traditional norms, the first, in Tokyo was clad in a living material that evolved over time. Starck believes that creation, whatever form it takes, must improve the lives of as many people as possible, he is a true renaissance man.
