Artemide Eclisse

The Eclisse table lamp was a brilliant answer to a simple question. How can I dim the light from a table lamp? As small inline dimmers did not exist in the sixties Vico Magistretti had to think sideways. His solution was to make a spherical steel light on a swivel base with an internal curved shutter that, by turning a small wheel, decreased the size of the aperture in the front of the lamp. This certainly reduced the brightness but it also created an unexpected visual effect. By closing the shutter entirely a total eclipse was created, complete with beautiful corona. The design was so different that it has survived to this day and still creates a simple pleasure by its operation. Now included in permanent exhibitions in some of the world’s great design museums the Eclisse has truly come of age.
