The Balzac sofa is part of arguably the most important range of furniture of the last twenty years and as such the chair is permanently exhibited in the V and A. Its characteristic shape arose from designer Matthew Hilton's observations on the way that people actually sit in chairs and sofas - rarely upright and erect, but more often curling, lying or slouching. The Balzac encourages you to sit right back in its depths, the shape and position of the arm designed to accommodate where the sitter's own arm would naturally rest, this is especially apparent in the chair. It is handmade to order in Norfolk where the skilled staff draw upon timeless English furniture making techniques and combine long established practices with proven modern materials. As shown the Balzac three seat sofa has a beech frame covered in multi-density foam, a sinuous steel spring platform with duck over foam seat cushions and rounded oak legs. A chair, ottoman and a two seat sofa are also available. Your choice of fabric or leather.
