Le Klint 172b

Le Klint have been making extraordinary lights and light shades for over one hundred years, well at least their pleating girls have. The pleating girls, so called because they pleat and are girls, have mastered skills that are pretty much unique in the world. It takes three years to learn how to fold every light in the Le Klint range and very often those skills are honed over a working lifetime. It has been wondered why only woman pleat for Le Klint and the answer is a little bit brutal, men can’t do it. So that’s me told then. Whatever the reason the result of all this exclusivity is a culture of unity and tradition that effortlessly creates by hand what machines (and men) can’t, fantastically crafted shades that hang like glorious sculptural art works. Made of a specially developed white plastic each light starts out flat on a roll until life and dimension is embossed, creased, pleated and sewn into it. Le Klint harks back to a different era, one where a skill is kept in house, in town and in country and not simply sold off to the lowest bidder.
