One of the great things about a timeless product is that it always looks new. When encountering the Mari Bowl for the first time the assumption often is that it is a recent design, this year’s must have, the very latest thing. Truth is it was designed in the 1960’s is considered a classic and still retains its original colour palette. It sprung from the restless mind of Armi Ratia, the founder of Marimekko and by the time she thought of it it was already an old idea. The Mari Bowl’s origins were as a generic shape that had been common to countless glassworks throughout the twentieth century. What Armi did was to idealise it and replace the standard clear green glass with a series of bright bold colours that only the specialist colourists at Iittala were able to produce. So an enduring alliance began and to this day, despite being an Iittala product, the Mari Bowl still carries the Marimekko brand.
