Artemide Miconos

With most table lamps the idea is to diffuse the light from the bulb, to hide the bulb if possible or to find clever and sometimes convoluted ways of giving the impression that there is no bulb at all. The Miconos approaches the light bulb from a slightly different angle, head on actually. Here it is elevated, placed smack bang in the middle of a crystal clear ball of glass. The light is not diffused at all, in fact the only way of controlling the character of the light is through your choice of bulb. Some prefer a large white decorative whilst others of a more technical disposition are happy to display a coiling compact fluorescent or dazzling LED. However, the favourite at the moment seems to be the wound, softly glowing filament of a large vintage style bulb. Designed by Ernesto Gismondi for Artemide the Miconos is all about celebrating the humble light bulb, ensuring that this enduring symbol of inspiration will, in one light at least, always be the centre of attention.
