‘I haven’t seen this since I was a child!’ Is the delighted comment we often hear from forty somethings where Playplax is concerned. Hardly surprising as Playplax was once incredibly popular and in the sixties and seventies sold over a million copies. Designed in 1966 by art student Patrick Rylands Playplax became a phenomenon, a brilliant combination of pure colour, architecture and interlocking square genius. Rylands went on to invent lots of other toys and garner many awards but it is Playplax for which he remains rightly renowned. This reissue is indistinguishable from the original, made in the same Cheshire factory, using the original dye recipes and materials Playplax is more resumption of production than reproduction. Now part of the permanent collection of the V & A Playplax perfectly demonstrates that the simplest ideas are often the best.
