Tom Dixon Base Floor

Tom Dixon is a designer who embraces the industrial. He has a love of the solid, of the substantial but has the ability to wield heavy materials with a very light touch. He can create seemingly solid balls of metal that float like soap bubbles, beaten copper light shades that hang like found artifacts or pressed glass lamps that look electricity pylon insulators. His designs can appear hewn, carved, forged, sand cast and yet they never feel contrived or overwrought, they each have an aesthetic authenticity and clear authorship. The Base Floor light exemplifies the Tom Dixon approach. The shade is a single piece of copper or brass plated steel which is polished to a super high reflective finish and which contrasts with the textured matt black heavy cast iron stand. The light is both ethereal, mirroring its surroundings and weighty, anchored as it is to the floor. The Base Floor Light is a true Tom Dixon creation, a paean to both the opposition and submission to gravity.
