Tom Dixon Etch Web

The Etch Web suspension light by Tom Dixon is a large 60cm diameter sphere shade with an unusual open webbed structure, designed to create atmospheric light and shadow play when illuminated. Another experiment in Tom Dixon's long running exploration of mathematics and geometry, an irregular pentagon shape is repeated sixty times across the body of the Etch, each piece fitting together to create a complete sphere. With the facets formed through a process of digital photo-acid etching and made from stainless steel the beautiful globe acquires a highly polished finish giving it a remarkable shine and almost jewel like quality as external light is reflected off the mirrored surface. The Etch Web works well with almost any type of light bulb from a hand wound vintage to a cutting edge LED but is perhaps most interesting with a clear halogen bulb hanging from its black and white cable as this will cause the intricate web to cast the most dramatic shadows.
