Lightyears Calabash P1

The fruit of the Calabash vine has been a familiar shape throughout Africa and Asia for thousands and thousands of years. Harvested young its fruit is sweet and marrow like, left to mature, dry and harden it can be used as a bottle or utensil even a pipe. This recurring form caught the eye of designers Boris Berlin and Poul Christiansen, they had noted how the hollowed out Calabash gourd was sometimes painted during festivals and hung as an ornament and so they were inspired to emulate this extraordinarily versatile gift from nature. Manufactured by Danish light company Lightyears the Calabash is made from drawn aluminium, perfectly finished and then coated with a special chrome lacquer to give an iridescent surface. With an internal reflector to increase the down light the pendant creates a warm atmosphere and works beautifully on its own or hung in clusters as if from a vine. Available in gold and silver in three sizes the Calabash is perfect for any situation where a spectacular interior effect is desired.
