Little Bird is a range of irresistible decorative figures designed by designer Jan Christian Delfs. The simple, but expressive design represents a well-balanced mix of purity, abstraction, minimalism and, not least, cuteness. The birds are turned in wood with the fine and characteristic beak as the sole detail. The six different sizes and six different colours each represent a particular character in the designer's own family, each tiny design related variation giving the birds personality. As a clear collector's item, Little Bird is sold individually so your flock of birds can continuously grow.
Appearance: Simple lacquered wood capsule with a beak and an air of incredulity.
Designer: 2016. Christian Delfs for Normann Copenhagen.
Material: Solid oak, paint and imagination.
Size: Six sizes, from 13.5cm tall, down to 3cm tall (about the size of a chubby thimble).
Cleaning: Cautious dusting, if you can catch them.
Origin: Designed by Germans working for Danes.

Vendor: luckyboysunday
Type: toys and games
Price:

Hey there, Lucky Rat, the bestest little friend you'll ever have or need. With him as your friend you'll most likely bathe in diamonds. In case you didn't already know, he's kind of lucky. He hails from Luckyboysunday, home of Camilla Ebdrup and Camilla Korschen who design ever so slightly odd things without ever really realising it. Lucky Rat is one of their more understandable creations, quite restrained in comparison to the rest of his knitted family though they do all share a certain sensibility (with the possible exception of Beauty Baby). What he also shares is being made of purest alpaca in Bolivia by talented women working under the fair trade principles which pretty much guarantees that there is love knitted into every woollen fibre of his being.
Dimensions: 20cm when standing.
Appearance: Knitted one-eyed rat with red striped jumper.
Designer: Luckyboysunday. Denmark.
Material: Soft alpaca. Polyester filling.
Size: 20cm when standing.
Cleaning: 30 degree wool cycle or hand wash.
Age: Not suitable for children under three.
Origin: Made in Bolivia.

LuckyboySunday are Camilla Koerschen and Camilla Ebdrup, two highly creative textile designers with backgrounds in fashion and art, who founded their studio in 2007. As individuals they are in no way typical and were determined for their idiosyncrasy to find its way into their products. Koerschen was born on a rainy monday in 1977, it has rained on every one of her birthdays since, Ebdrup was born on a cloudy saturday also in 1977, it has been cloudy on every one of her birthdays. Koerschen was a child folk dancer and loved making pink marzipan roses, Ebdrup was a girl scout who liked whittling little men out of wood with her penknife. Korerschen lost a lot of pets and buried them with full ceremony, Ebdrup loved to scare her baby brother by pretending to be a ghost. The Camillas try to capture the poetry of the unsaid, they feel the unspoken is the path to creativity, they set out to design the best brand they could think of, those thoughts have taken root and Lucky boy Sunday has grown.

Timorous Beasties was established in Glasgow in 1990 by Alistair Mcauley and Paul Simmons who met studying textile design at Glasgow school of art. Timorous Beasties’ work embodies a unique diversity of pattern, ranging from designs that echo a golden age of copperplate engraving to examples of a distinctly edgy nature. In 2004 Timorous Beasties unveiled their critically acclaimed Glasgow Toile, by reversing the pastoral context they transformed the traditional toile to create an exclusively modern urban genre. This was followed by the Hotch Blotch fabric series placing disorder within the structure of damask pattern to reveal the inherent beauty of splatters, drips and blotches. Hunting Toile and Urban wallpaper marked a synthesis of 18th-century chinoiserie groupings to create a contemporary ornamental pattern repeat. Timorous Beasties mine the seam between nature, art and society and promote a world view, where plants, animals and society are visually inextricable.

Karl Zahn was born in rural Vermont in 1981, he is a freelance product and furniture designer living in Greenpoint Brooklyn. His work with wood and natural materials is an extension of the teachings from his home and time spent playing in forests and wood shops. After completing his studies in Product Design at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2003, Zahn worked as an architectural fabricator in San Francisco. He also spent time in Copenhagen studying Danish furniture design. Zahn draws inspiration from the long history of Danish industrial craft, with its balanced function and form. Since relocating to Brooklyn in 2007, Zahn has set up his own design shop. A recurring theme in his work is “old technology.” Zahn believes that the pace of technology moves too quickly to fully exhaust all possibilities and is interested in examining and preserving “forgotten technologies” by repurposing them into contemporary lifestyles.
Areaware is a design and manufacturing company based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in the good ole US of A. They like to think of themselves as a producer of everyday objects that are functional and unusual but this doesn’t really come close to describing how singular they are. Working with an extraordinary roll call of innovative and visionary young designers Areaware are pushing the boundaries on product design creating thoughtful items that inspire an immediate emotional response. Critical to their success is a very healthy sense of humour which threads its way through everything they produce. This does not trivialise what they do but potentially transforms the prosaic into the poetic, galvanizing young and local talent in the process, and raising hopes of becoming a new voice for American design. Areaware believe quite rightly that the appreciation of beauty is central to human life itself and want to embody this principle in even the simplest of things.

Though originally from Scotland, Donna now runs a studio and workshop in London where her hard-working team knit, sew, pack, and send out products to fans and design shops around the world – 30 countries at last count. Passionate about creating products that people can connect with, the studio is committed to making things that can be treasured. Using UK based manufacturers and suppliers wherever possible they do their bit to keep craftsmanship alive in Britain. In 2010 Donna won the coveted ‘Designer of the Year’ at the British Design Awards, and in 2011 she exhibited a solo show of knitted sculptures and paintings at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

This is Digby from Donna Wilson, a cheeky chappy who likes chorizo sausages and dislikes guinea pigs. Obviously Donna didn’t invent the soft toy but she most certainly did reinvent it. Taking the simple naive drawings of children as a starting point she created a family of truly bonkers yet completely irresistible characters. Knitted in soft lambswool and assembled by hand in the UK they seem to somehow fit perfectly into those empty, strangely shaped spaces in our hearts. Each comes with a clue to their personality so that you know early on what your new friend expects of you. Love mostly. And not sticking him or her in the washing machine.
Dimensions: 42cm approx when standing.
Appearance: Slightly odd knitted creature.
Designer: Donna Wilson. Scotland.
Material: Soft lambswool. Polyester filling.
Size: 42cm approx when standing.
Cleaning: Careful hand wash or dry clean.

Libby and Rich are the owners of Rume and every once in a while it becomes necessary for them to roll up their silken sleeves and get their hands a little dirty by designing something. 'It's a snap, anyone can do it,' said Richard, to the rowdy cheers of passing engineers. 'Design is little more than thinking out loud whilst scribbling on a serviette. I can't believe people go to school to learn something that's easier than tripping over a curb.' And Richard should know, he's always tripping over curbs.
