Karl Zahn was born in rural Vermont in 1981, he is a freelance product and furniture designer living in Greenpoint Brooklyn. His work with wood and natural materials is an extension of the teachings from his home and time spent playing in forests and wood shops. After completing his studies in Product Design at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2003, Zahn worked as an architectural fabricator in San Francisco. He also spent time in Copenhagen studying Danish furniture design. Zahn draws inspiration from the long history of Danish industrial craft, with its balanced function and form. Since relocating to Brooklyn in 2007, Zahn has set up his own design shop. A recurring theme in his work is “old technology.” Zahn believes that the pace of technology moves too quickly to fully exhaust all possibilities and is interested in examining and preserving “forgotten technologies” by repurposing them into contemporary lifestyles.
Areaware is a design and manufacturing company based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in the good ole US of A. They like to think of themselves as a producer of everyday objects that are functional and unusual but this doesn’t really come close to describing how singular they are. Working with an extraordinary roll call of innovative and visionary young designers Areaware are pushing the boundaries on product design creating thoughtful items that inspire an immediate emotional response. Critical to their success is a very healthy sense of humour which threads its way through everything they produce. This does not trivialise what they do but potentially transforms the prosaic into the poetic, galvanizing young and local talent in the process, and raising hopes of becoming a new voice for American design. Areaware believe quite rightly that the appreciation of beauty is central to human life itself and want to embody this principle in even the simplest of things.

Vendor: Luke Smith-Wightman
Type: Tabletop
Price:

What exactly is the Pivo. Is it a garden utensil? A railway spike? A jousting lance for a mouse? Nope. Leave it lying about at parties and see if your guests can figure it out. Watch as they lever a sticky kitchen drawer open with it whilst trying to find a bottle opener. Oh how we laughed. This fantastic, extraordinary, you guessed it, bottle opener is designed by Luke Smith-Wightman and makes the perfect puzzling present. Beautifully turned from a single piece of solid brass it has all the heft of a well engineered thingamabob and being brass it is easy to find amongst all the stainless steel in the utensil drawer. But be warned, once used it is difficult to put down and may encourage a little too much imbibing such is the simple pleasure of its operation. Pivo, it’s what beer is made for. Apparently.
Dimensions: L 13cm. Dia 2.4cm.
Appearance: Slightly odd brass thingamabob .
Designer: Luke Smith-Wightman. London.
Material: Solid CNC turned brass.
Size: L 13cm. Dia 2.4cm.
Cleaning: Soap and water. Brasso for shine.
Origin: Made in England.

Luke Smith-Wightman studied furniture and product design before entering the field of architectural lighting design. Much of his time is spent on lighting projects and daylight design consultancy for architecture, through his company Fine Science. His interest in developing useful objects is driven by dissatisfaction with much of what is presented as contemporary design and a fascination with production technologies. He believes good design is too often presented as added value, something in addition to the process of developing a useful thing. An object may be described as ‘designer’ or may reference the person who designed it but this is rarely because the object is good but is more likely a marketing ploy. There are design shows, design blogs and design awards, there is too much design, it is being devalued through saturation. He feels the answer is to put the designer behind the object, let the object speak for itself, if it is good enough it will be heard.

Vendor: Donna Wilson
Type: toys and games
Price:
60.00
This is Digby from Donna Wilson, a cheeky chappy who likes chorizo sausages and dislikes guinea pigs. Obviously Donna didn’t invent the soft toy but she most certainly did reinvent it. Taking the simple naive drawings of children as a starting point she created a family of truly bonkers yet completely irresistible characters. Knitted in soft lambswool and assembled by hand in the UK they seem to somehow fit perfectly into those empty, strangely shaped spaces in our hearts. Each comes with a clue to their personality so that you know early on what your new friend expects of you. Love mostly. And not sticking him or her in the washing machine.
Dimensions: 42cm approx when standing.
Appearance: Slightly odd knitted creature.
Designer: Donna Wilson. Scotland.
Material: Soft lambswool. Polyester filling.
Size: 42cm approx when standing.
Cleaning: Careful hand wash or dry clean.
Age: Not suitable for children under three.
Origin: Made in the UK.

Donna Wilson set up her company in 2003 after making odd knitted creatures for her final show at the Royal College of Art. The creatures sold out and she has since built her business designing and making a collection of curious cushions, luxurious lambswool blankets and light hearted ceramics for the home. Though originally from Scotland, Donna now runs a studio and workshop in London where her hard-working team knit, sew, pack, and send out products to fans and design shops around the world – 30 countries at last count. Passionate about creating products that people can connect with, the studio is committed to making things that can be treasured. Using UK based manufacturers and suppliers wherever possible they do their bit to keep craftsmanship alive in Britain. In 2010 Donna won the coveted ‘Designer of the Year’ at the British Design Awards, and in 2011 she exhibited a solo show of knitted sculptures and paintings at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

Libby and Rich are the owners of Rume and every once in a while it becomes necessary for them to roll up their silken sleeves and get their hands a little dirty by designing something. 'It's a snap, anyone can do it,' said Richard, to the rowdy cheers of passing engineers. 'Design is little more than thinking out loud whilst scribbling on a serviette. I can't believe people go to school to learn something that's easier than tripping over a curb.' And Richard should know, he's always tripping over curbs.

Sally Nencini was born in County Armagh in Northern Ireland and studied menswear at the Royal College of Art. This led to a career in fashion where she designed for Levi’s and M&S amongst others. Sally left the industry to concentrate on raising her three children and this new full time occupation rekindled a long-held interest in designing and creating knitted lambswool animals, blankets and cushions. Sally set up her business from her home in south east London in 2009 but is now based in Norwich, Norfolk, from where she oversees production all of which is carried out in the UK. Her products have rapidly developed into gentle yet recognisable designs with a delightful British sensibility, her love of vintage toys, especially the imagery and colours of early Galt and Abbatt wooden puzzles and picture cards are predominant influences in her work. Sally has also trained as an upholsterer, hand embroidering the top cover of chairs to create functional works of art.

Vendor: Playforever, Julian Meagher

42.00
From vivid colour blocking to bright two tones, Bonnie’s design is inspired by the bold fashion and footwear coupled with early Formula One racing cars of the 1960's. Cool, hip and totally rock’n’roll, Bonnie is a real head-turner, much like the hot rod cars upon which it is modelled. A Playforever classic, to be treasured for generations.
