Jan Hoekstra was born in Maastricht, the Netherlands, in 1964 and graduated from the Design Academy in Genk, Belgium, in 1989. Jan entered FLEX the INNOVATIONLAB in 1990, engaged in the design and development of various consumer products. In 1997 he began working in a design consulting capacity for BK kitchen products and later on for Unilever and also started coaching at the Design Academy Eindhoven. In 2003 he co-founded the brand Royal VKB and then after a parting of the ways established Jan Hoekstra Industrial Design in Genk, occupied mostly with product design for various brands. His aim is to always to keep design to an absolute minimum, purpose should alway be more obvious than design, it is his intent to turn our everyday tasks into everyday pleasures. Hoekstra has received various design awards and some of his products are in the permanent collections of the MoMA New York and the Chicago Museum of Architecture and Design.
