Richard Sapper was born in 1932 in Munich, Germany and is considered one of the most influential designers of his generation. His products typically feature a combination of technical innovation, simplicity of form and an element of wit and surprise. He has received numerous international design awards and his products are part of the permanent collections at New York's MoMA, as well as London's V&A. In 1959 he partnered with architect and designer Marc Zanuso and they were hired as consultants to produce well-designed Italian products that would compete with Japanese and German ones. Together they designed a series consumer electronics that became enduring icons. In 1972, Sapper designed the Tizio lamp which remains one of the best-selling lamps ever produced. In 1980 Sapper was appointed principal industrial design consultant at IBM and began designing numerous portable computers. Sapper continues to oversee the ThinkPad brand to this day.
